Biographical entry Gregory, J. ( - 1932)
Professor J. Gregory joined the Wallaby Club in 1900 and maintained his membership until 1904. He was President in 1903. He was a geologist, geographer and explorer and the foundation Professor of Geology at the University of Melbourne (1899-1904). He undertook extensive exploration in North America and Africa making important observations in a number of fields. He was Director of the Geological Survey of Victoria and published The Dead heart of Australia (1906) which evoked the works 'dead heart' for the central deserts of Australia. He died in 1932 in a boating accident in Peru.

The Wallaby Club is a Melbourne-based walking club established in 1894 with a strong bias towards good fellowship, talking and an appreciation of both the natural and built environments. Membership is strictly limited and is by invitation only.
