Captain Edgar Johnston joined the Wallaby Club in 1958 and maintained his membership until his death in 1988. He was elected President in 1970, was Secretary 1978-1979, Walks Secretary 1971-1977 and later awarded honorary life membership. He was the First Superintendent of Aerodromes and later Assistant Director General of the Department of Civil Aviation, and an international advisor to QANTAS. He served in the Australian Infantry Forces in World War I (Gallipoli and France) as well as in the Royal Flying Corps as a fighter pilot.

The Wallaby Club is a Melbourne-based walking club established in 1894 with a strong bias towards good fellowship, talking and an appreciation of both the natural and built environments. Membership is strictly limited and is by invitation only.
