L. Coombes joined the Wallaby Club in 1965 and maintained his membership until his death in 1988. He was elected President in 1974. He was an aeronautical engineer and the Foundation Chief of the Division of Aeronautics of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), which later became the Aeronautical Research Laboratories. He was a fighter pilot in World War I and a pilot with Sir Charles Kingsford Smith.

The Wallaby Club is a Melbourne-based walking club established in 1894 with a strong bias towards good fellowship, talking and an appreciation of both the natural and built environments. Membership is strictly limited and is by invitation only.
