Bill Balding joined the Wallaby Club in 1980. He was elected President in 1988 and was Walks Secretary 1981-1984. He trained in science and was a Chemist at the Munitions Supply Laboratories, Maribyrnong, 1942-1946; in charge of a small research laboratory at Kraft Walker Cheese Company, 1946-1948; Sales Manager for Laporte Chemicals (Australia) Pty Ltd in Sydney, 1948-1955; a Research Staff Officer for Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Head Office, 1955-1968; Secretary of the Division of Mineral Chemistry, CSIRO, Port Melbourne, 1968-1980. He had much experience as a bushwalker and a skier.

The Wallaby Club is a Melbourne-based walking club established in 1894 with a strong bias towards good fellowship, talking and an appreciation of both the natural and built environments. Membership is strictly limited and is by invitation only.
