Professor Ian Polmear joined the Wallaby Club in 1991, was Acting Secretary and Secretary from 2000 to 2003, and President in 2004. A metallurgical engineer, he worked first in industry and then at the former Aeronautical Research Laboratories, before being appointed to the Chair of Materials Science at Monash University in 1967. He was Foundation Chairman of the Department of Materials Engineering at Monash from 1970 to 1986, and served as Deputy Vice Chancellor before retiring in 1991 to become a part-time consultant. In 1950, he represented Australia in athletic at the British Empire Games in Auckland.

The Wallaby Club is a Melbourne-based walking club established in 1894 with a strong bias towards good fellowship, talking and an appreciation of both the natural and built environments. Membership is strictly limited and is by invitation only.
