N. Bavington joined the Wallaby Club in 1993 and maintained his membership until 2002. He was a teacher, a school principal and a senior policy officer with the Victorian Department of Education. He was a Brigadier commanding the 3rd Division Field Force Group, an Honorary Colonel of Cadets for Southern Command, and was Aide-de-Camp to two of Australia's Governors General.

The Wallaby Club is a Melbourne-based walking club established in 1894 with a strong bias towards good fellowship, talking and an appreciation of both the natural and built environments. Membership is strictly limited and is by invitation only.
