- academic, musician and science archivist
Gavan McCarthy joined the Wallaby Club, with much enthusiasm, in 2002. In 2005 he was elected to the Wallaby Club Committee and was elected Club Archivist and Historian in 2007. He trained in music and archives and over time developed an abiding interest in the history of Australian science, technology and medicine. When he joined the Club he was Director of the Australian Science and Technology Heritage Centre and a Senior Research Fellow with the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Melbourne. He held this position from 1999 to 2006. In 2007 the ambit of the Centre was extended and became the University of Melbourne eScholarship Research Centre. Previously he had run the Australian Science Archives Project (1985-1999). In 2002 he started doing consultancy work for the International Atomic Energy Agency looking at the very long term maintenance of information about radioactive waste. He also plays double bass with the band Jugularity.

A Private Club
The Wallaby Club is a Melbourne-based walking club established in 1894 with a strong bias towards good fellowship, talking and an appreciation of both the natural and built environments. Membership is strictly limited and is by invitation only.
