Dr Ian Russell joined the Wallaby Club in 2006. Graduating in medicine at Melbourne University he commenced training in surgery. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. His special interest was the early detection and treatment of breast cancer - particularly breast conservation and reconstruction after mastectomy. He established the first breast clinic in Melbourne and directed the pilot study of mammographic screening. He was a Consultant Surgeon at the Royal Women's Hospital and was Head of the Breast Service and Director of Breast Screening at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and founding Chairman of the Breast Study Committee of the Anti Cancer Council of Victoria.

The Wallaby Club is a Melbourne-based walking club established in 1894 with a strong bias towards good fellowship, talking and an appreciation of both the natural and built environments. Membership is strictly limited and is by invitation only.
