Biographical entry Sercombe, Alan G.
Alan Sercombe joined the Wallaby Club in 2009. After graduating in Mathematics from the University of London he became a computer programmer using early Ferranti and LEO systems. In 1963 Alan joined LEO Computers in Melbourne as consultant to the Shell Company for their first computer installation. Subsequently he held management positions in computer companies in Adelaide and Sydney. After retirement Alan relocated to Melbourne in 1999.

Born in 1934, he grew up in Harrow in north west London. He was educated at state schools and Queen Mary College, University of London, graduating as a BSc(Hons) in Mathematics in 1955. His two years' National Service in the Royal Army Education Corps included 15 months teaching in Singapore, at the Army Children's Grammar School.
In 1958 he became a programmer at Armstrong Siddeley Motors in Coventry using a Ferranti Mark 1* computer. He became chief programmer at Standard Triumph and subsequently DP Manager for their LEO II computer installation. Alan moved to Australia in 1963 to open LEO Computers' Melbourne office and act as consultant to the Shell Company for the installation of their LEO III computer. After the merger between LEO and ICT he was transferred to Adelaide as Computer Centre Manager.
In Adelaide he met and married Jan. In 1973, they moved to Sydney where he joined AWA's Computer Division, supporting the marketing of computer systems and software. He became Commercial Director in 1989 and retired in 1996. In 1999 Alan and Jan relocated to Melbourne, where Jan died in 2003. They had no children but he is close to her extended family. His interests include travel, especially exploring new places on foot, the AFL (St Kilda & North Melbourne Clubs), the Melbourne Racing Club and the Caxton Beefsteak & Burgundy Club.

A Private Club
The Wallaby Club is a Melbourne-based walking club established in 1894 with a strong bias towards good fellowship, talking and an appreciation of both the natural and built environments. Membership is strictly limited and is by invitation only.
