Dr Max Lay, joined the Wallaby Club in 2010. He was elected to the Wallaby Club Committee in 2011. He trained in civil engineering and has specialised in structural engineering and then road engineering. He was Engineer-in-charge, Major Steel Structures, SECV, in 1967-1968; Engineering Research Manager at BHP in 1968-1975; Executive Director, Australian Road Research Board, 1975-1988; Director Major Projects, VicRoads, 1988-1996; Principal, Sinclair Knight Merz, 1996-2003; Director, ConnectEast, 2004-present. President of the Royal Society of Victoria in 1995 and 1996, and was a Councillor for many years. Director RACV (1985-2008), Deputy Chairman (1997-1999), President (1999-2002). President Australian Automobile Association (2000 to 2002). He was appointed as a Professorial Fellow at Melbourne University, and elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and an Honorary Fellow of Institution of Engineers, Australia.

The Wallaby Club is a Melbourne-based walking club established in 1894 with a strong bias towards good fellowship, talking and an appreciation of both the natural and built environments. Membership is strictly limited and is by invitation only.
